Workshop: Microservices: Mapping & Implementation

Duration: 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Day of week: Friday

Level: Beginner

Key Takeaways

  • Understanding and applying Wardley Maps
  • Discovering the core subdomain and proper boundaries with Domain Driven Design visualized by Wardley Maps
  • Building core-domain in-house vs outsourcing commodities to utility suppliers
  • How Wardley maps can be used to visualize the evolution of the value chain
  • Going from open-source software to Kubernetes container orchestration
  • Other tools that can be incorporated including Serverless with AWS Lambda

Prerequisites

  • Familiar with the concept of Microservices
  • Depending on the time left we are going to play around with some examples. For the examples you need:
    • Your own laptop with your preferred IDE installed
    • Google Cloud Platform account (for Kubernetes example)
    • AWS account with admin permissions (for Serverless example)
    • Java 11 and Node.js, npm, TypeScript installed

Please note that this workshop is a repetition of the Thursday workshop.

The journey to Microservices can be very challenging due to infrastructure and operational complexities Microservices come with. This reflects the risk shifting the focus from building your core domain to handing these complexities and ending up with compromises on parts of your software solution you should not compromise.

This workshop will focus on how a small team can handle infrastructure complexities that will  come with Microservices and still deliver business and user value.
